head up. Her eyes met those of the kid through the glass. He smiled. Her gaze switched to the barrel of death staring her in the face. The finger on the trigger tightened. She had time to swear once before she fired. |

The window exploded. The kid disappeared. D.J. bit her lip until she tasted blood. She should get up and walk around the car to check on the kid. She could hear him crying and the sound made her want to cry, too, but she couldn't make her legs obey the command. Instead, she dropped her head and rested her cheek against the cool vinyl of the seat. She opened her left hand. The radio fell to the floor of the car. |

A siren wailed in the distance. |

"My baby," Josie whispered. Tears filled her eyes as she met Raphael's gaze. "What have you done to her?" |

The fallen child lay on the pavement, clutching his shoulder and shrieking. Violent tremors shook D.J. as she lay half in and half out of her squad car. |

"I haven't done anything." Raphael gave an offended sniff. "You wanted to see your child. There she is." |

"She's not a baby. She's a woman." Josie frowned. "How long was I in that tunnel?" |

"Time moves differently for us than it does for them. When you have eternity to contemplate, a few moments here can be a lifetime down there." |

Josie was stunned. Her daughter had grown into a woman. A very different woman than Josie had ever envisioned a daughter of hers becoming. |
